About the Company
We founded WizardTies.com in March 2004 to supply Harry Potter costumers with the one remaining elusive piece of their Prisoner of Azkaban uniforms - that bleepin' tie. We are committed to delivering the highest quality costuming supplies while keeping them affordable for people from all walks of life, from high school students to professionals.
We are also concerned for the welfare of all people. To that end, we will be donating 10% of all retail profits to charitable causes consistent with the humanitarian values expressed in the Harry Potter books. With this tithe, we hope to pass on our good fortune to those who desperately need it.
About the Founders
By day, Lauren Kent works in IT for a major investment firm in New York City. She became a fan of the Harry Potter series in August 2001 but was costuming long before that - her senior ball gown came straight out of a certain 1999 space opera. Lauren is an avid knitter and operates atypically.knit, which offers Harry Potter-based patterns and handknit goodies. She's also done technical work for Terminus, Phoenix Rising, The Witching Hour, and FictionAlley. She manages WizardTies.com's web presence and fandom PR.
Jan Kent is a licensed massage therapist (and Lauren's mom!) living in beautiful central New York, but in previous incarnations she held positions from women's clothing buyer to chamber of commerce administrator to self-employed upholsterer. Her long history of introducing children to sci-fi and fantasy began in 1977 when she loaded her young nieces and nephews into a station wagon and took them to see Star Wars at a drive-in theatre. Jan possesses an affinity for spirituality, alternative healing, and esoteric subjects and attends more than a dozen expos and conferences each year as a representative of Twilight Lamps. She coordinates WizardTies.com's wholesale agreements and day-to-day operations.
