You've got your tie. What else do you need to complete your costume?

This list is more or less final at this point. If you'd like to take a look at stills yourself, atypically.knit is hosting a reference image archive. If you have any additional thoughts or suggestions, let us know at costuming@wizardties.com.

And good news for everyone already planning to dress up for the next movie release: It's looking like the uniforms haven't changed!

  • Need help tying your tie? Check out Tie a Necktie.com for instructions on three different type of knots. It appears that most students in PoA are using a four-in-hand knot, with the exception of Hermione and possibly Draco, who probably tie a half Windsor. You may also want to use a half or full Windsor knot if the ends of your tie are hanging out the bottom of your sweater. Also, note that many students are wearing the narrow end longer than the wide one - no time to fuss in the morning!
  • Hooded black robe with colored facing at the front panels, sleeves, and hood (burgundy for Gryffindor, green for Slytherin, dark blue for Ravenclaw, mustard for Hufflepuff) and black lining in the back. The new robes have one black frog closure and a house patch over the left breast, and they hit near the ankle. This tutorial from Robes For All Occasions (www.costumebeginner.com/malkins/) contains a list of pattern and fabric suggestions, along with helpful tips from experienced costumers. If you don't sew, check out Wizarding School Robes (www.msu.edu/~lockha26/pages/basicblacks.htm).
We recommend patches from PatchPalace.com. In addition to their PoA-accurate robe patches, they've just added a book Ravenclaw patch, so students from all houses can wear the nicest patches around.
  • Dark charcoal grey v-neck pullover with three thin stripes in house colors at the wrists and waist. The stripes, in order, are light-dark-light - so that's gold-burgundy-gold for Gryffindor, silver-green-silver for Slytherin, silver-dark blue-silver for Ravenclaw, and yellow-black-yellow for Hufflepuff; the two outer stripes are slightly narrower than the inner one. Hobbie's House (WizardKnits.com) offers PoA sweaters in all five houses. There's also a house cardigan and sweater vest (for which Hobbie's has kindly posted a free handknitting pattern in addition to offering them for sale!) which appear in the movie, but the pullover is the primary sweater.
  • White dress shirt. That's easy enough!
  • Scarf in house colors. The new style is similar to the ties - big dark stripe, then a narrow stripe in the light color, then narrow dark, then narrow light again. (The exception to the color scheme is Hufflepuff - they have black stripes on a yellow field.) There are fourteen repeats of this pattern, and there's short fringe (about 1" long). Hobbie's House also makes these.
  • Dark charcoal grey knee-length skirt (girls) or belted slacks (boys). The skirt looks to be a box-pleated (where the fabric folds in on itself, not 'accordion-style' like the old skirts) wrap skirt, with a button on the front of the left hip. Many costumers are using Buckhead School Uniforms (BuckheadUniforms.com) - style 134PCT in charcoal grey - although the fabric may be a bit light. You may want to call to place their orders since uniform sizes are different from regular American or European sizes.
For summer 2005, Old Navy (OldNavy.com) is offering a pleated poly/rayon/spandex pleated grey skirt that's reasonably similar to the PoA skirts, and much easier to find. It has three pleats on the front instead of two, and it's a bit long, but the sizing range is wide (American misses' sizes 1-20) and it's currently marked down to $19.50.
Or, if you're feeling gutsy, make your own skirt with Starfire Phoenix's mini-tutorial (www.starfirephoenix.net/hppoaskirttutorial.htm).
  • Black Mary Jane shoes with black stockings (girls) or black dress shoes (boys).
  • A wand from Whirlwood Magical Wands (Whirlwood.com), of course. What's a witch or wizard without one?
